The New Year is in full swing! We bet that many of you are still thinking about your New Year’s Resolutions, especially after reading our last post. But change can be hard right??!! Whether it's going great or slow, don’t worry because we have you covered! Here are five secrets to keeping to your resolutions:
Revisit Your Plan
Have you heard of the saying fail to plan, then plan to fail? This applies to your resolutions! Plan ahead (or even re-plan after you've started) and create a detailed approach that contains the action steps that will help you achieve your goal. You should think about any obstacles or challenges that might get in your way. By knowing exactly what you have to do and the strategies that you can take if difficulties arise, you will feel better equipped and more confident to stick to your resolutions in the new year!
Track Your Progress
Keeping track of your progress is important to know you are moving in the right direction. This will allow you to quickly change your course of action if you see that something isn’t going right. Documenting your progress will also let you see how far you’ve come and serve as motivation to keep going. One of the simplest ways to track your progress is to write weekly reflections answering these three questions:
Break It Down
Although many of us are excited and motivated to cultivate healthier habits in the new year, resolutions can still be pretty daunting. Breaking your resolution into smaller steps can make it seem more achievable and approachable. One of the best ways to do this is to set daily, weekly or monthly goals that will bring you closer to achieving your resolutions.
Find A Community
Whether it’s a group of friends or an online community, being surrounded by like-minded individuals is a great way to stay motivated to stick to your resolutions. When you share your goals with others, they can help keep accountable and moving in the right direction. Watching others work towards their own goals can also provide a source of inspiration. Most importantly, they can provide encouragement and cheer you up when you need a little confidence boost.
Reduce Negative Influences
While it’s important to have people around you that support your goals, it’s equally as important to reduce the amount of time you spend with those that hold you back. Trying to achieve a goal or change a habit is hard enough without someone telling you that you can’t or should not do it. If there are people in your life that constantly discourage you or diminish your goals, set some boundaries and stand your ground!
Practice Self-Compassion
It’s the journey that counts, not the destination! If you slip up a few times, don’t beat yourself up about it. Life is hard and there will be setbacks. But don’t let this bring you down! Keep trying and do the best you can each day!
Becoming better versions of ourselves each year requires hard work and commitment. Don’t let this deter you. Instead, use it as an opportunity for growth, learning and self-improvement. The most important thing about New Year’s Resolutions is that you try your best and learn from your mistakes!
