Let’s face it. It’s the age of The Home Gym. Home gyms are just more convenient. You don’t have to commute, share equipment or listen to lousy workout music. And best of all, you get to work out in the privacy of your own home.
Everyone and their uncle seems to be posting on social media about their elaborate home gyms. The FOMO is real. But you don’t have to spend tons of money to have a good workout at home. A few pieces of smart and functional equipment are all you need. Here are our 5 favourite workout equipment for building an effective home gym.
Yoga Mat
If you want to work out at home, a yoga mat is probably the most fundamental piece of equipment that you need. From yoga to Pilates to HIIT, you can use a yoga mat for pretty much any workout! These mats help to cushion your movements, reduce slipperiness and increase comfort while exercising. We use a yoga mat for EVERY workout that we do at home!
Resistance Bands
Don’t let the average look of resistance bands fool you. These bands can burn! Resistance bands come in fabric or rubber and are usually sold in sets of various thicknesses for an easy way to add resistance and variety to your regular workouts. They are also very affordable compared to other workout equipment. Their small size makes them space efficient and portable, so you can work up a sweat wherever you are!
Dumbbells
You don’t need large pieces of equipment such as weight machines or barbells to get strong. Free weights are one of the most effective ways to get fit and build strength at home. They are sold in a wide range of sizes, shapes and weights, making them a very versatile exercise tool. Their small size makes them suitable to be used for a variety of exercises such as squats, crunches and even jumping jacks! If we had to pick, dumbbells are definitely our favourite at-home fitness equipment!
Sliders
Sliders are flat, round disks that allow you to slide around on a surface. If you want a strong core, sliders are a must-have for your home gym! Sliders add an element of instability to your workouts. This means that your muscles, especially your core, have to work harder to keep you stable while you perform exercises. They are also great to add a little spiciness to low-impact workouts because your hands and feet never leave the ground while using the discs. Lastly, sliders can add intensity and speed to bodyweight movements such as mountain climbers or lunges, allowing you to torch more calories. A little ab work AND calorie burn? What more can we ask for?
Skipping Rope
One of the most common questions we get about working out from home is what to do for cardio. Most cardio equipment is expensive and requires a lot of space. But that does not mean you can’t have an effective cardio workout at home! Enter: the jump rope. This old-school workout tool will get your heart rate up and get you sweaty in no time. But the benefits don’t stop there. Skipping rope will give you a full body workout because it requires you to engage muscle groups all over your body. This includes your hamstrings, calves, quads, core, biceps, and shoulders. This means that you will not only be improving your endurance and cardiorespiratory capacity by skipping rope but also your strength. It’s also an incredibly fun way to exercise!
And that’s it! That’s all you need to have a great workout at home! Whether you have an elaborate home gym or just a few simple pieces of equipment, the most important thing is to stay consistent with your workouts! Let us know what your favourite piece of equipment is!
