We love a good yoga session. But do you truly know what yoga can do for your body? If your assumptions about yoga are stopping you from trying it, this post is for you. Today, we are debunking three of the most common misconceptions about yoga.
Myth 1: You have to be flexible to do yoga
The notion that you have to be flexible to do yoga could not be further from the truth. Yoga helps to improve your flexibility! Yoga postures can be modified to suit your needs and as you practice regularly, flexibility will come naturally. Whether you have stiff shoulders or tight hamstrings, you do not have to force yourself into postures that you are not ready for. Yoga is a form of movement that accepts everyone and meets you where you are at!
Myth 2: Yoga is not a workout
Most people assume that yoga is slow-paced and gentle. While some forms of yoga, such as Yin Yoga, are more restorative, there are others that are faster-paced. Ashtanga and Vinyasa are examples of more vigorous forms of yoga. Yoga will also challenge you mentally. The coordination, balance and breathwork involved in practicing yoga will give you a mental workout just as much as a physical workout! Don’t underestimate yoga, you can definitely work up a sweat!
Myth 3: You can’t get strong doing yoga
Although yoga is based primarily on body weight movements, this does not mean that yoga does not improve your strength. Contrary to popular belief, yoga is not just stretching. It is a series of postures that promote functionality and helps your body become stronger in the ways it was actually designed to move. Your body requires a lot of core strength, stamina and muscle endurance to execute and hold yoga poses correctly. In addition to improving your muscles' range of motion, it also helps to sculpt and grow your muscles. If you want to get strong and improve your physique, yoga can definitely get you there!
